Bengal Partition
The year 1899 George Nathaniel Curzon took over charges of Viceroy of India and stayed till 1905. Centred on the proposal in regards to reconstruction of demography of Bengal (undivided Bengal) by chief commissioner of Madhya Pradesh Sir Andrew Fraser, there started one introductory dialogue in 1901. Later on Fraser appointed as Lt Governor in Bengal. November 1903 he subsequently suggested a separate province comprising Chattogram (Chittgong) and two divisions of Dhaka and Mymensingh to be attached with Assam province. Curzon gave out a positive signal to the idea to hinge Bengali people. During the period February 1904 while visiting Dhaka, Curzon expressed his view point on partition of Bengal and idea of new provinces. Bengal and its people not to be dominated by such deceitful ruling by the British lords and flooded every corner of streets with Anti-government posters. Meanwhile, Curzon received the favourable consent from Nawab Sallimullah. Provided that in the new province Dhaka being the capital while Muslim community will have maximum authority to rule. Centering around Dhaka and other states with Islamic faith to be composed to make province called “Eastern Bengal & Assam”. Another province to be comprised of 11 Jillas of Bengal, Darjeeling, Bihar and Orissa. Maharaja Suryakanta disproved the idea in square language while being approached by Curzon. October 16th 1905 Bengal was partitioned without any further talks and Bamfylde Fuller became first Lt Governor of “ Eastern Bengal & Assam”.
Revolutionary Guru, Chief Captain of Dhaka Anushilan Samiti, Sri Pulin Behari Das comments “it was a massive blow to community with Hindu Faith and mass scale protest erupted against the partition of Bengal. While Hindus are up in arms, on the other hand Nawab Sallimulah gave supreme, heroic reception to Curzon arranging all scope for pleasure and amusement”
This started to disorient the Bengali mass psyche dividing into two parts Hindu & Muslim. Hindus carried the flag to fight against the cause which eventually became armed freedom struggle.
