Presidency University in Kolkata hit the headlines once more and certainly, for wrong reasons. Despite repeated pleas of students to organize within the university campus it was rejected outright citing the secular, foundational principles of the globally acclaimed educational institution. What make the institution secular? It’s the principles of Henry Louis Vivian Derozio or the radical, Christian professor who had attempted to introduce the ‘Young Bengal’ movement in the early 19 th century. It must be stated, Derozio deemed everything, be it the religious fervor or its principles of India as well as Hindu Dharma as derogatory and this led to a great confrontation between him and orthodox Hindus then. The institution then was known as ‘Hindoo College’!
