Racial intolerance gaining momentum in Meghalaya

Is xenophobia on the rise in North-east India once more? Many fear the same while the elders have started to memorize the stormy 70s when such struggles, plausibly endorsed by Missionaries then even, got rampant leading to violent persecutions and genocides even. Now too, there is hardly any difference and all these are being stated, owing to nasty disruptions witnessed of late through the rally of the Federation of Khasi-Jaintia and Garo People (FKJGP) in Shillong, Meghalaya. All these had taken place only on last October 28, 2022 when the ‘anti-employment rally’ happening in Shilong, capital city of the Indian state of Meghalaya, under the aegis of Federation of Khasi-Jaintia Hills and Garo People (FKJGP) took an ugly turn through a sudden violent assault on non-tribals. If it’s not all, number plates of vehicles plying on roads and lanes were checked and those from outside Meghalaya were attacked while some were destroyed at once. And what’s most sickening, owing to the advertisement of ‘Cherapunji Ki Diwali”, released by Netflix just prior to the consecrated Kali Puja, Bengalis were termed as ‘scumbags of British’!

Despite there have been strong protests both on social media and ground, the fear is yet to die; apprehension of worst is also rising steadily among the non-tribals and people inhabiting Meghalaya from outside. The heart-wrenching story can be tracked through the extensive coverage provided by the “Hindu Post”.
